What is a homeschool support group? Homeschool support groups connect families to provide opportunities for social interaction, friendship, support, and mentorship. They can be anything from a few families that get together for playdates to formal organized groups offering classes, co-ops, field trips, sports, and meetings. Support groups also often function as the first line of defense against threats to the right and freedom to homeschool in a state. Support groups are usually formed around a common ideology or approach to home education. You can find religious and secular groups, groups that focus on formal education, unschoolers, subject-based groups, and more. Catholic families benefit from connecting with others in our household of faith. “So the, whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all, and especially for those of the family of faith.” Galatians 6:10 When do you need a homeschool support group? The answer to this question is … pretty much always! Even families that don’t wish to engage in lots of organized activities outside of the home can benefit from a connection to a homeschool support group. Through this connection, you can find out about local events such as conferences, keep up-to-date on legislative issues, and get information about informal get-togethers for your children. And for those who are looking for lots of resources, mentorship, and support, a homeschool support group is the best way to get what you need. Many groups have communication systems using email, social media, or social networking apps to keep in touch and announce events and gatherings. How do you start a homeschool support group? What if you don’t find what you are looking for in a support group? Or there just aren’t any near you? Then start one! Connect with another family or two to begin regular get togethers and invite others to join you. You can advertise by posting your information at your local library, putting a notice in your church bulletin, or simply through word of mouth. Meet at a local park or playground to get time for both moms and kids to connect. This is a great way to ask questions of other homeschool moms, find out about local arts, sports, or cultural class opportunities, and learn of any parish groups for homeschoolers. As your group grows, you can add other activities for members. Popular meeting ideas include bringing in a guest speaker, family potlucks, field trips, curriculum fair and show-and-tell, used book sales, teen nights, and moms nights out.
